This set of bar mitzvah tefillin is known as Peshutim Mehudarim, meaning the battim (boxes) of the tefillin are constructed of a single piece of hide, as required, but goat skin is used to form lighter battim. The finished product looks just like the more expensive cowhide type (Tefillin Gassot), but they are not as durable. While Tefillin Gassot can last a lifetime, these bar mitzvah tefillin should last for about five years of day-to-day use.
