In recent years tallit bag manufacturers have introduced impala, suede, leather and even fur to the fabric repertoire, but velvet tallit bags have always been popular and always will be. The most common base color, by far, is a very dark navy. These bags are not designed to match the tallit, but rather work fine with any tallit at all.
Velvet tallit bags are almost always around the same size (about 39 x 31 cm / 15 x 12 inches) and are designed to fit any tallit up to size 80. You might want to add a nylon bag cover or canvas bag cover, depending on how you transport your tallit.
Velvet accommodates embroidery machines very well, if you decide to opt for custom name embroidery. Some designs are very suitable for name embroidery (e.g. corner frames), others take almost the whole front side, leaving the back as the only option and still others are somewhere in between, i.e. with possibilities for letter embroidery, but no obvious location.
Many velvet tallit bags have only silver thread embroidery. Other possibilities are gold, gold and silver and multi-color thread designs. Some high-end tallit bags also have metal and gemstone elements added on to complement the embroidery work.
The lower priced velvet bags are typically manufactured in China or India and imported to Israel (yes, Chinese production can embroider Hebrew letters!). These do the job, but more expensive bags made in Jerusalem and other parts of Israel generally are made of higher quality velvet, more professional embroidery work and better craftsmanship – distinctions that are hard to discern on a computer screen.
